Bank Holiday Book Binge!

Hello everyone!

Recently, the weather has turned rather dismal (rather like my mood!) and so I’ve found myself with plenty of time on my hands! A constant endurer of the rainy weather Britain has on offer, I find times like these call for only one thing- a good old book!

I’ve made a list of my top 5 current reads, in hope that someone, somewhere will make good use of my recommendations!

  1. The White Queen- Philippa Gregory
  2. I Capture the Castle- Dodie Smith
  3. Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry- Mildred D. Taylor
  4. We Were Liars- E. Lockhart (an easy read, but good nonetheless)
  5. To Kill a Mockingbird- Harper Lee

There’s quite a variety of genres in my list to keep you going! ‘The White Queen’ and ‘I Capture The Castle’ are both historical romances, but still quite easy going (ICTC is definitely aimed at younger readers.) ‘Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry’ is heart wrenching (I’m warning you now!) but a fantastic piece of literature! ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ is of course a classic, and similar to ROTHMC in terms of culture and American history. Both are worth a read! As for ‘We Were Liars’, beware of the ending- it will leave you traumatised, frustrated and possibly even doubting your own existence!

I know the synopsis’ were brief, but I’m keen not to give anything away! Feel free to discuss the books in the comments (any other recommendations would be highly appreciated!)

Just a quick note before I go. Would a ‘monthly book’ be something of interest to anyone out there? Perhaps a book that a couple of people (or whoever wanted to) could all read and then discuss on one another’s blogs!? Let me know (please email me for enquiries regarding my blog on acharlottething@gmail.com)

Love, Charlotte X

Brilliant! Luckily for me, I can’t say the weather is as bad here as you say it is in Britain! In fact it’s really starting to feel like Summer, so I think I’ll have to read your recommendations whilst soaking up a bit of sun outside! I’ll give a spare thought for you shivering across the Atlantic though, I promise!! I read The White Queen series and seriously enjoyed it! I had to buy it off amazon because my local Barnes and Noble didn’t stock it (I don’t think it’s as popular here in America as it is in the UK.) So I was hoping it was worth the trouble! As for I Capture the Castle, I think I’m going to have to give that a try! Didn’t Dodie Smith write 101 Dalmatians, or is that my childhood brain getting muddled up?! I read To Kill a Mockingbird when studying for my finals, and I remember it really making me feel “grown up”. I think my high school tutor told me that ROTHMY was a sequel to To Kill a Mockingbird or similar in some way, but again, correct me if my memory is wrong! My cousin who is 15 is raving about We Were Liars, I think I’ll have to give it a try. I don’t like the sound of the ending though, apparently she was crying for days after reading it??! I love the idea of a monthly book- kind of like a book club? That probably makes me sound really sad, but I think I was the only teenager in high school to be glad about the summer reading marathon! Oh well! I personally don’t have a blog- I’m thinking of starting one, but I’ve recently started college and my Mom goes on about my procrastination enough as it is- I honestly don’t think I’d do anything else! I think for now I’m happy to be the observer, but a book club kind of thing is something I’d really love to read on yours (and others) blogs! Good luck in finding people to do it with, and good luck with establishing your blog! Love from the USA!

Thank you for your kind comment! It really is encouraging when you don’t seem to attract much audience haha! The weather sounds lovely *says grudgingly through gritted teeth* ! I don’t know whether The White Queen is as big in the US, but it is a very “English” book if you know what I mean! No, you are right! Dodie Smith did write 101 Dalmations- a great children’s book author! Give I Capture the Castle a try for an easy read, it really is great! To Kill a Mockingbird is a rather grown up text I suppose, especially when you’re a child. Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry isn’t by Harper Lee, but it is very similar so that’s probably where you/your high school teacher was coming from! It is a bit of a ‘teenagery’ book, but good nonetheless! And a nice Summer read I’d say. I’m sure you’ll understand a bit more about her reaction after you read it for yourself!!! Thank you, I hope I find some willing people. It’s definitely harder than it seems! I’ve resorted to commenting on blogs all afternoon, hoping that someone will be interested! Maybe someday once you’ve completed college, or feel safe from distraction, you can start a blog? I’d definitely check it out! Good luck with college and thank you! I hope this blog turns into something- I’m not giving up, the early days are the most important!

I’ve read To Kill a Mockingbird, but not the other books you mentioned. I may check them out. Unfortunately I read To Kill a Mockingbird for school and probably was too young to fully ‘get it’ at the time. It’ll probably end up on my re-read pile. I’m also curious about the new book by Harper Lee: Go Set a Watchman. Is that one you think you’ll read, too?

Hello! I also read To Kill a Mockingbird at school, and didn’t ‘get it’ at the time, which is why I’m re-reading it now! Now that I get it I can fully appreciate what a truly wonderful book it is! As for the others, they really are worth a read! I’m so excited about Go Set a Watchman, I will definitely be reading it!!
